It seems like a long time has passed since the seemingly infinite string of 2011 bank holidays, but luckily there’s another one just around the corner!

August can be temperamental weather-wise, so before you start inviting everybody round for a bank holiday barbecue, be warned that the Met Office has advised that most places in the UK will be receiving plenty of rain throughout August. Luckily, there are limitless activities so your August bank holiday will remain thoroughly enjoyable, despite any weather issues.

For something quintessentially English, why not pop to a gorgeous countryside location for a spot of afternoon tea? Popular venues include the Wedgwood Visitors Centre where afternoon tea includes sandwiches, cakes, quiche and assorted biscuits. Not only does this get you out of the house, but you could also find yourself in a beautiful countryside location with plenty to explore.

For those who prefer their drinks with a little more kick, why not visit the fabulous Vinnopolis at Bankside in London? This unique attraction is entirely devoted to the world of wine creation, being laid out in accordance with the great wine producing regions of the world: France, Italy, Australia, California, South African and Thailand. A trip here includes some fascinating history of wine-making, not forgetting the all important wine-tasting session. Make sure you eat a decent meal beforehand though as the day might end up cut short if the alcohol goes to your head!

For an affordable bank holiday activity, a cultural evening could be had at a stunning West End theatre watching one of London’s top musicals. Whether you might like to see Legally Blonde, Stomp, Chicago or Thriller, there is nothing quite like a magical evening spent in London’s West End. You can top the day off with a delicious meal or even head for lunch on a cruise along the river Thames.

If you have children to entertain this August bank holiday, there are some superb exciting activities for them to try out. Perhaps they might like to try Go Karting, or spend the day at a Kids’ Spy Academy? Alternatively, families can get up close to some incredible animals with a day spent at the zoo feeding the penguins or meerkats!

A lack of sun doesn’t have to result in a lack of fun this August bank holiday. Pick a brilliant bank holiday activity for the whole family to enjoy, and that won’t burn a huge hole in your bank account! Make the most of what remains of summer 2011 and have a terrific time.
